Paris Saint-Germain Defeats Marseille in a Shootout to Claim French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now secured the season-opening trophy on fourteen separate occasions.

The Parisian giants needed a dramatic equaliser followed by a successful spot-kick decider to overcome their arch-rivals in the Gulf and secure a fourth straight French Super Cup title.

The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a straightforward win in the match between the Ligue 1 winners and the Coupe de France winners after Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring early on.

However, the southern French side struck two times in the closing moments to take a shock lead. First, Mason Greenwood scored from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking turn of events, the Portuguese striker snatched a vital leveler in the final moments to send the match into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the hero, stopping crucial attempts from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a 4-1 penalty win.

The record winners Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now won this competition for the twelfth time in the last 13 seasons.
