Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
